So, um, yes, I sort of forgot I had a Dreamwidth. Or a LiveJournal. Or a, y'know, most of the internet in general. To be fair I've been quite busy. Sometime this evening I plan to go back over my sparse DW reading list (what is it even called? I know you're not supposed to say "friends page") and find out what I've missed! But for now, an update.

Health - Went for an MRI - it was noisy and a bit scary but I got to see a picture of my brain and it looked... like a brain. Apparently as far as they can tell it is a normal brain, doing what normal brains do, which is a relief as apparently especially in people my age TN can be caused by cysts and tumours etc. But apparently I just have the regular "we don't know WTF causes it" kind. Anyways my medication seems to be calming down a bit and I'm seeing a neurologist soonish.

Writing - I was all "Ta-da! I have finished my second draft and now it just needs polishing and tinkering!" and then I pulled at a loose thread and half of it unravelled, so, fun and games with that but I'm getting there, I think...

Adventuring - We went to Croatia for a few days! Much fun was had. Everyone else had lots of ice creams and since I can't I pulled off the grand feat of three candy flosses in one day. Also did you know you can dip chips (ie fries) in chocolate sauce and it really, really works? ALSO the other day we  went on the Harry Potter studio tour for a friend's birthday and it was, dare I say it, magical. If expensive. But mostly magical! :D

Work - I'm looking desperately for something new, I'm heartily sick of my job, but in the meantime I'm working from home again permanently after JUne 11th. I'll go in on Wednesdays but that's it. And now I really want to find a new job before they install all the extra computer equipment they've promised me...

Speaking of computer equipment - My laptop is off with the insurance's repair people to verify the fact that she's dead as a doornail. I'm keeping my fingers crossed I'll get a payout for a new one. In the meantime Cara is being incredibly generous with hers. <3

Avatar/Korra - I am so sad that I finished Avatar because I wanted it never to end. But I'm really enjoying Korra so far! I love how Korra's journey is so different to Aang's - it's not just a new setting and time, they're both in completely different places and need to learn totally different lessons. Also Lin. Lin!!

So, I'm experimenting with crossposting between Dreamwidth and LJ... we'll see how I get on with it...

I've got a bit behind with the internet, what with one thing and another... my new medication is making me really sleepy AND my computer is in bits while Andrew tries to figure out some way to save it, but the outlook isn't good...

Anyways, some lovely bullet points:

* Went back to the doctor, it's still probably trigeminal neuralgia. I'm going for an MRI and to see a neurologist. In the meantime I'm on a slightly higher dose of medication, but the doctor was surprised that that dosage was even keeping the pain under control to the extent that I'm still going to work and socialising, so hopefully that's a good sign! Also I'm getting the hang of the side-effects a bit better - I can stay up late now even though I'm sleeping very soundly, and the dry mouth is just making me drink loads of water which is good for me anyway!

* My birthday! It was good. Cara got us tickets to Folk by the Oak! Dad got me a Kindle. I have named it Zoe. Also Jenni made me amazing TARDIS wrist warmers! And I got books and a pasta maker and a castle and lots of other lovely things! Hurrah!

* My computer. It is not so good. A couple of weeks ago it just stopped working. Andrew says the motherboard is kaput. I need to find out whether I can claim for it on the house insurance, since I sure as hell can't afford a new one right now. Luckily Cara is very generous when it comes to letting me use hers.

* Writing. I wanted to be finished with my second draft by now, but being ill set me back a bit. But I'm onto the final section, and I've decided to change it around a fair bit. I'm still hoping to have a good second draft by the beginning of May.

* We're off to Croatia soon! Only for a few days, but I'm looking forward to it a lot. Plus we're taking a couple of days off after too, I'm looking forward to the chance to relax, and also to get some stuff done.

Right, off to catch up on AAAAAAALL the internet. How are you all?
cosmic_llin: (CROSS Picard pout)
So apparently I may have this thing called trigeminal neuralgia. I'm not 100% convinced because the doctor diagnosed it pretty quickly (although the other main candidates, sinus infection and dental cavity, had been pretty much ruled out by that point) so I'm going to get a second opinion etc, but it does sound very like what I've been experiencing. And apparently if it is that I will have it my entire life YAY.

So that kind of sucks. But I got given some super-strong stuff for it that seems like it might be helping. It's making me super-woozy but also I typed this whole thing so far without a break to go 'AAARGH MY FACE PLEASE GOD MAKE IT STOP' which is an improvement on how my week has been going so far.

Hmm, I was going to do a separate post but what the heck, now I'm typing. I finished watching Huge and I have some thoughts:

NO SHOW WHY DID YOU HAVE TO END?!?!?! )

Also [livejournal.com profile] carawj and I caught up on Once Upon a Time. OMG it is so much fun. I'm actually kind of sad that we caught up because now we can't marathon it, but at least now I will actually know what [livejournal.com profile] damelola is talking about all the time. ;D

Right, off to eat porridge very gingerly!
cosmic_llin: (DOCTOR WHO SJ typing)
So, I seem to have quite a lot to say at the moment on a variety of topics...

Theatre! )

DS9 Relaunch Novels - Worlds of DS9/Warpath/Fearful Symmetry (a few spoilers and mention of rape) )

Huge - the most adorable and perfect TV show I never knew about )

Life and Feelings and Stuff )

OK, that might be it for now... various fandomy posts to follow...
cosmic_llin: (HAPPY toksvig)
Sorry for the spam, this will be my last entry today. ;)

This is mostly a post to say I've signed up for [livejournal.com profile] fandom_stocking again this year - it's a delightful and low-pressure festive fandom exchange, and the last two years I've had lots of fun doing it. If you'd like to stuff my stocking, it's HERE. I would love to stuff yours! Let me know if you have one! :D

Hmm, what else? I am looking forward to Christmas, shopping two-thirds done, Christmas concert with the choir imminent, Christmas tree going up sometime this week probably, aaaall the fandom things to be doing this month, been to some theatre (including Sharon Gless in A Round-Heeled Woman, OMFG), going to some theatre (including BONNIE LANGFORD IN SPAMALOT AAAAAAAHHH MY HEART), work driving me mad, writing going well on and off...

How are you, flist? I've been a bit busy and offline-y recently so let me know if anything's going on with you!
cosmic_llin: (WRITING first draft)
So, [livejournal.com profile] mini_hannah, [livejournal.com profile] silly_cleo, [livejournal.com profile] carawj and I set ourselves a challenge to post more regularly, so here's my stab at it. Although I actually posted fairly recently. ;)

* Second draft of the novel is coming along bit by bit. I was stuck on a bit that didn't work because of things I changed late in the first draft, and it took me forever to figure out that the whole problem could be solved by the scene in question taking place indoors instead of outdoors. *headdesk* So now that's sorted out - onward!
* Also working on a new project, a website for kids... still in the planning stages, watch this space...
* Bit frustrated that I suddenly have a lot less writing time, since I'm back working in the office, which means three hours commuting every day. On the flipside that's three hours reading time, but it's not the sort of commute where writing is really possible, or I could alternate. I'm really not enjoying being in the office. Working from home really suited me and going in every day stresses me out and makes me unhappy. I'm going to try to find something else.
* But yes, silver linings etc, I achieved my aim of reading a lot in September partly due to my stupid long commute. It was only ten books, but three of them were the insanely-long Tawny Man Trilogy, which I quite enjoyed but which annoyed me in places. Before that I read some factual books, mostly feminism-related, some good short stories and a couple of new-ish fantasy things I'd been meaning to get around to. Next up are a couple of quick little Star Trek tie-ins before Snuff comes out this week.
* [livejournal.com profile] silly_cleo and I joined a choir! It's lots of fun so far and I really have missed singing.
* We went to the Entertainment Media Show (Collectormania) the other weekend, which was a thoroughly disappointing experience, but at least I got my picture taken with some guy dressed as a Klingon? So it could have been worse.
* Spent yesterday having Yom Kippur dinner at [livejournal.com profile] carawj's grandparents' house. I've been there a few times before but this was the first time I've been invited to Jewish Stuff, so I was very pleased (and nervous) to go. I had a nice time and now we have lots of leftovers, hurrah!
* Life shows no signs of getting any less busy - theatre trips, stays with my dad, visits from various friends and family, outings, innings... lots of fannish things coming up over Christmas... not going NaNoWriMo this year so I'm sort of looking forward to a bit of a quieter November than usual...
cosmic_llin: (RANDOM London)
August has contained many things. Among them a trip to Cornwall (sunny! Scone-ful!), picnics (delicious! Croquet-tastic!), a weekend in Edinburgh (fringe-alicious!) and various other delights. Plus [livejournal.com profile] carawj are moving house on Sunday! We're not going far, just up the road, but we'll have lots more storage space, and a little garden!

The summer has been so busy that I'm getting a bit worn out, and so I really want to try and have a quieter September. As part of this, I've decided to make September my month of reading. I haven't read much at all lately - admittedly partly to do with short attention span due to sadness - but I'm getting back into a reading sort of mood and I want to really try to read a lot in September. Anyone is welcome to join me!

Semi-relatedly, on the train back from Edinburgh on Monday (having been inspired by a Neil Gaiman talk at the book festival, and some good chats with Manda) I finished the first draft of my YA fantasy novel. I'm now starting the second draft, wheee. Fun times.
cosmic_llin: (CROSS B'Elanna WTF)
The first five people to comment in this post get to request that I write a drabble/ficlet of any pairing/character of their choosing. In return, they have to post this in their journal, regardless of their ability level.

Knock yourselves out, [mostly] ladies!

(I'm in London, there are lots of sirens going past, it's a bit scary, I have Opinions about it, LJ is my happy-fun-place... Distract me, fandom!)
cosmic_llin: (HAPPY chance to fly)
Got back last night, in work already today. Fleh.

On the plus side, it's [livejournal.com profile] carawj's birthday!

Kitezh was fascinating and lovely as ever, I had a great time (briefly) catching up with [livejournal.com profile] aerialsky in Moscow, and St Petersburg was great. Very weird to go back as a tourist after having lived there almost five years ago.

Anyway, detailed account of my travels to follow. I can't possibly catch up on the whole internet, so, tell me flist: what's going on? What's in the news? What ridiculous viral video have I missed? What fic do I need to read, like, now? Who's done something cool? Who needs a hug? Tell me your stuff!
cosmic_llin: (RANDOM Russia)
It's only quarter to ten and I'm more-or-less packed! This is astounding!

My internet connection in rural Russia will be shaky at best, so I'll probably be able to reply to emails now and then, but this is goodbye to LJ, at least until mid-July!

Have a terrific month, everyone!
cosmic_llin: (RANDOM Russia)
Off to Russia again early on Wednesday morning. I am now in the excited/panicky/ambivalent stage of preparation. Excited because I love it there, panicky because there's too much to do before I leave, ambivalent because I'll miss [livejournal.com profile] carawj.

Rambling )
cosmic_llin: (RANDOM jim moray)
There is stuff going on in real life now, but nothing that feels like it wants blogging about, so instead here's a list of songs I've been listening to lately:

Songs That I Like! )

Oh, the one thing that I should say is that I'm off to Russia again for a month or so on June 15th! At least, if they send my visa back... it was supposed to come back by today but it hasn't, although I hear they're very busy at the moment... so fingers crossed...
cosmic_llin: (DOCTOR WHO happy sj)
I still can't quite believe she's gone.

Elisabeth Sladen shaped my fandom life for years, and without knowing it, she had a huge influence on my life in the 'real' world, too. As Sarah Jane, she inspired my wardrobe choices, my writing, and my very first fanvid. I devoted hours, days and weeks of my life to chronicling her appearances in Doctor Who and The Sarah Jane Adventures for my website. I watched her episodes of Doctor Who and SJA whenever I needed to relax, or cheer up, or feel a bit closer to home. I even bonded with the Russian children I taught over showing them SJA in class.

Not only that, but having Season 2 of SJA to focus on and get excited about helped me to deal with my own mother's cancer diagnosis, and watching The Temptation of Sarah Jane Smith helped me to come to terms with some of my family issues.

Most importantly of all, through Sarah Jane fandom I met some lovely people, many of whom are now an important part of my life. Including my BFF and Awesome Twin, [livejournal.com profile] ladyvivien, without whom I would never have met my wonderful [livejournal.com profile] carawj, and [livejournal.com profile] silly_cleo who has become one of my very favourite people.

She never knew me, but the gifts she has given me will stay with me for a very long time.
cosmic_llin: (Default)
So, I have reached that great and magical milestone. Quarter of a century. One box up when I next fill in a survey. I am twenty-five years old.

Ramblings about my life, ahoy! )

Also, just to say, there are several things I intend to reply to, but they're all in tabs on my laptop, and my power supply is broken. New one should be arriving soon, and in the meantime, I'll try to remember what I was going to comment on!
cosmic_llin: (RANDOM well behaved women)
So, 2010, not so great for me in some ways. And probably when I think back on it, all the stuff with Mum is going to be what I remember most. Possibly, in a lot of ways, the worst year of my life so far.

But then, 2010 was also the year that I celebrated my first anniversary with [livejournal.com profile] carawj, did Princess Laserquest for my birthday, was immortalised in a museum, went to a Prom and a folk festival, wrote most of a novel from scratch, saw more theatre and comedy than ever before, went to dozens of picnics, parties, games nights and food-themed gatherings, went to Russia for the umpteenth time, got back into Star Trek fandom, holidayed in Italy and Cornwall, came out to my Welsh family, and got closer to a lot of people I really enjoy spending time with. And you know, I'm really sad right now, but apart from the sad stuff, my life is pretty awesome.

In 2011 I hope for more awesomeness and less sadness. [livejournal.com profile] carawj has already started the awesomeness off by paying for us to go to [livejournal.com profile] vidukon as my Christmas present! *bouncebouncebounce* Also, I'm planning another Russia trip, hoping to take another exciting European holiday, determined to see lots more theatre, planning to write lots and lots, and looking forward to spending time with my terrific friends. 2011 is all fresh and new and I'm excited to fill it with memories.
cosmic_llin: (SAD little amelia)
Thanks for all the good wishes guys. Knowing that you all care is a real help. :)

I'm less than ok but coping. Being sad sure seems to take up a lot of energy.

This seems as good a time as any to mention that I am doing [livejournal.com profile] fandom_stocking again this year. It's a fun exchange where everyone has a post that's their 'stocking' and people can leave ficlets, icons, picspams, good wishes, whatever in the comments. The comments are screened until the reveal in January. I did it last year and it was really fun, so y'all should get one!

My stocking is HERE.
cosmic_llin: (SAD Deanna turbolift)
Mum died on Tuesday evening.

I didn't get to see her in the end but I'm kind of ok with that.

No idea when the funeral is yet, or indeed if I'll be welcome. I hope I'll be able to be there at least for the service.

This is so weird, you guys.
cosmic_llin: (YAY Kara)
So, it's been another busy couple of weeks - but that'll have to wait for another time, this is just to let y'all know that I'm off to Italy for a week tomorrow, hooray!

I'm quite ridiculously excited, this is the first proper holiday I've been on probably since Oz in the summer of 2007(?) - not that I don't love going to Russia, but it's more like a working holiday and doesn't exactly count.

We're doing it all on a tiny budget, but we're going to Amalfi and Pompeii, and I've never been to Italy before so I'm super-psyched!

Have a lovely week, everyone! See you on the flipside!
cosmic_llin: (HAPPY cagney and lacey lolz)
Still seems very peculiar to reach September and not be going back to school. A lot of people I know are either still in education or going back this year, and it’s a funny feeling to still be doing the same things I always do while they’re dealing with starting new courses and getting their reading lists and all that fun stuff.

Still appreciating the September-y feeling, though. If nothing else it means I can break out my winter wardrobe again. The sundresses and shorts and things have been fun, but I’m always a bit more comfortable in thick tights and wool skirts and sweaters.

It’s been a good summer, too. Probably one of the best of my life. I did all the proper summer things – I picnicked, went to music festivals (Cambridge Folk Fest – The Burns Unit are amazing!), went to the Edinburgh Fringe, and to Cornwall where I surfed (ish) and ate pasties. I played croquet and went to a sci-fi convention and the Pride parade and outdoor theatre and barbecues. It’s been wonderful, especially in contrast to last summer which I spent mostly miserable, broke, and travelling up to Edinburgh as often as possible to see [livejournal.com profile] carawj who was miserable and broke also.

So now it’s autumn again – 94 sleeps until Christmas! Before then I have plenty to look forward to – visiting and old friend in Nottingham this weekend, staying with my dad in Wales the weekend after, trip to Italy soon after that, Sarah Jane Adventures preview screening the day after I get back, Hallowe’en, Bonfire Night, and tickets to see Dar Williams in December… a couple of years ago I couldn’t have imagined having a schedule this busy – it’s almost too busy, I feel as though I hardly have time to breathe, but there’s nothing I want to let go.

In short, I’m a little bit exhausted and over-stretched, but generally life is good today.
