Oooh, also, I totally forgot, Cara and I went to Folk by the Oak the other weekend - her birthday present to me! It was such good fun, it's only a tiny one-day festival but there was lots going on, plus it was a lovely, sunny day. Music-wise, Emily Barker and the Red Clay Halo really grabbed me, as did Cara Dillon, and the Ukuleke Orchestra were lots of fun too. I have to say, I wasn't that impressed by Show of Hands - the music was good but they opened with three unbelievably cynical and miserable songs and I lost patience with it a bit.

On the whole the music was great, but possibly the nicest thing about the day was that we didn't have to do anything apart from turn up and lie around in a field listening to music, reading, snoozing and occasionally getting up for chips and ice cream. We spend so many weekends rushing around doing All The Things, it was really good to have some real down time. (Plus the last couple of years we've been to Cambridge Folk Fest, and although it's always good we spend more time dashing between stages and trying to figure out where we can sit, whereas FbtO was much easier in that respect because it's that much smaller.)

There is stuff going on in real life now, but nothing that feels like it wants blogging about, so instead here's a list of songs I've been listening to lately:

Songs That I Like! )

Oh, the one thing that I should say is that I'm off to Russia again for a month or so on June 15th! At least, if they send my visa back... it was supposed to come back by today but it hasn't, although I hear they're very busy at the moment... so fingers crossed...

O hallowed halls and vine-draped walls
For twenty-seven years I've been trying
When I look into your eyes I can see a love restrained
Oh it's been getting so hard

I heard there was a secret chord
Someone turns the key
So wake up
You saw me crying in the chapel
Sleep

The way you wear your hat
Hello, yes that's what I said
I heard you on the wireless back in 52
I slept all day
And I would do anything for love

Ok, so, [livejournal.com profile] carawj, [livejournal.com profile] silly_cleo, [livejournal.com profile] jakera, [livejournal.com profile] shinyjenni, Hannah and I just got back from the Doctor Who Prom. For those who don't know, the proms are a series of concerts in the Royal Albert Hall, they do it every year, and there's all sorts of different ones and you can get very cheap standing tickets and they're accessible and informal and fun and stuff.

And yes, today was the Doctor Who one. We queued for nearly seven hours to make sure we got in, and it was totally worth it.

The cut below is mostly a 'skip my incoherent squeeing if you can't be bothered' cut, but also some really cool stuff happened that you might not want to know about if you're planning to watch it when it's on TV.

Amazing! )

I have stuff I want to reply to but I may not get to it all this evening, exhausted! But I wanted to get this down while it was still fresh!

Feeling considerably cheerier and less dramatic today!
Partly because I've got a temping assignment and some shifts at the theatre - I feel a bit safer. And also, the temping assignment is the same really nice one I was on before I left (the girl they had in the interim was rubbish, haha!) and so I feel a lot less like going away to Wales just threw all my London stuff upside-down. Finances are still a bit wobbly, but hopefully I can get things back on track.
I just need to accept that this is going to be a weird time, and make the best of it.

A challenge for you, flist: I need to find a song about a woman who is ditzy/annoying, but secretly awesome. Upbeat would be best. Some of you may guess what I need this for... Any suggestions gratefully received!
