- Reply to this post with the word ICONS! and I will pick six of your icons
- Make a post (including this info) and talk about the icons I chose
- Other people can then comment to you and make their own posts
- This will create a never ending cycle of icon glee

This has been my default icon since forever, and I don't see myself changing it anytime soon. I made it from one of my own caps because I wanted an icon that was fandom-y, but also to do with writing, and Sarah Jane is one of my top characters of all time. I love how she can keep the Doctor on hold like she does - she's all 'yes, well, I do love the mysteries of time a space, but after my deadline, 'kay?'
OK... that gets less true the more episodes she's in, but at one point he's basically begging her to travel with him. This picture is from Terror of the Zygons, which I liked because Sarah got to be a journalist, which she hadn't done for quite a few episodes at that point. I love the way that, on the trail of an alien beast, she still takes time out to do her actual job. Props, SJ.

Beverly and Deanna exercising, by
sweetveritas
I got this one pretty recently, when I realised that I was talking about Star Trek femslash a lot more, suddenly, and I didn't really have any icons suitable. That said, although I love the relationship between Deanna and Beverly, I don't really ship them (much). I'm just really happy that they're friends and they hang out and go to exercise classes together and Deanna calls her 'Bev'. They're just cute.

Cagney and Lacey giggling, by

It is really hard to find any Cagney and Lacey icons at all. Seriously, guys - they're two real-looking, grown-up women who have problems and who are smart and who sometimes make mistakes but more often kick ass - where is the love?
I adore how strong their relationship is in spite of how different they are - neither of them could imagine living the other's lifestyle, but they still stick together through thick and thin and know each other better than anyone else.
Plus sometimes they shout things like 'Dammit, that's my partner in there!' And once they cooked together and it ended in a food fight.

OK, so, I went through a big glasses phase. Not a new thing, at all, but a bunch of TV shows/films happened to come out at once where my favourite characters wore glasses and were hot.
I don't know what it is about glasses... I don't understand why plastic or metal frames bearing lenses worn in front of the eyes would make such a difference... I can only assume it's the glasses=brains thing...

Made this after The Christmas Invasion. I ficced and blogged about my unhappiness with how Harriet got treated there, but I thought an icon wouldn't go amiss either. I loved Harriet and I thought that, morally questionable as her actions may have been, she did what she did for all the right reasons and I'm not sure I would have done different. The Doctor can't always be there to save the day - the world needs people like Harriet Jones.

Partners in Crime, by
carawj
I loved Ace and Mel's interaction in Dragonfire - they basically carry the whole story between them while the Doctor faffs about on ledges for three episodes. Mel is one of my favourite characters anyway, and I thought she worked especially well paired with Ace. I spotted
carawj using this icon before we even knew one another that well, and oh, I coveted it.
Now I get to steal whatever icons I want from
carawj, and this was the first one I went for! And sometimes I use it when I'm talking about the two of us, too, although we're more like partners in watching TV and going on picnics than partners in crime.
Also, on a related note, I still haven't run out of icon space. I have yet to find my perfect Kira squee/happy-face icon, I want more Cagney and Lacey ones, Doctor Quinn ones and maybe some travelling ones or literature ones. The search continues.

Date: 2010-08-09 04:39 pm (UTC)Okay, now. Harriet Jones and Laura Roslin: ever been seen in the same room together? *eyebrow waggle* Love a scifi ladyleader of ambiguous morality.
Clearly, I need more classic Who in my life. Love the sound of Sarah Jane.
And yes, why is a happy Kira so hard to find? I also need Garak. And, um, a higher userpic limit. Curses.

Date: 2010-08-10 09:23 am (UTC)I think that's nice about femslash fandom, though. If you're into dude slash then you can be all 'oh, I only read stories in which Spock gets his pon farr and he and Kirk are on Risa at the time and everyone wears a mask and etc etc' and there'll be enough stories to keep you going. If you tried that with femslash you'd never read anything. People always just seem really happy to be reading femslash at all, even if it's not the pairing they might choose first.
On that note, there SHOULD BE fic where Harriet Jones and Laura Roslin at least meet. I wouldn't be surprised if there was.
Yes! Watch some Sarah Jane! She's a good one to follow in chronological order, although that can be disappointing because she has a really awesome introduction and then gradually gets less in-your-face, although she's still pretty cool by the end.
Hmm, maybe I'll post some of my DS9 screencaps later and see if anyone wants to icon them up...

Date: 2010-08-10 12:22 pm (UTC)Aaaand.... snarfing my coffee. Seriously. So true! I don't get OTP-ness, as a rule, anyway – what I want is good writing, first, and all other desires come later. Who cares if Spock's in ponn farr if the story is full of comma splices and verb-tense disorders and badfic clichés? Sadly, 'good writing' is a rather imposing limit, and if you add 'femslash,' you're left with a very sad Venn diagram indeed. (I mean, OKAY, I have suffered through some serious abuses of language and punctuation and style and imagination for the sake of kinky Kira/Dax fic. So maybe I'm a total hypocrite.)
This is something I've really enjoyed about

Date: 2010-08-10 03:22 pm (UTC)I used to be all about OTPs… I got into online fandom via Janeway/Chakotay and was indoctrinated into their ways. Boy those JetC shippers were intense… Then I moved towards Harry Potter fic when Voyager ended, and my endless quest for absolutely anything featuring McGonagall helped me to see that multi-shipping is really much more fun.
This morning I started reading a licensed Star Trek book featuring mirror universe versions of Janeway and Chakotay getting busy on the floor of an engine room. Ten years ago I would have flipped. Today I just LOLed. Perhaps I have grown as a person…? Or perhaps I’ve lost something special. Oh well!
And I think you’re right about good writing being the most important thing (and yes, thank god for WNW). But it is harder to be picky when it’s femslash!
(Incidentally, I am right now listening to the Nany Visitor version of Fever…)

Date: 2010-08-11 01:29 am (UTC)A very much younger version of myself got a little too involved in the X-Files fandom wars between 'Shippers' and 'NoRomos' – at fourteen, with really hopelessly ignorant ideas about what constituted attraction and romance, I couldn't begin to conceive of how a man and a woman could be partners in anything but a romantic sense. Shows what I knew.
And oh, Nana. One of the many ways in which fandom has permanently altered my brain: I cannot hear that song in any version without visions of Lola Chrystal very pleasantly burning my eyeballs. (Witness: the dance (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nw9RW2fjrCU) to Beyoncé's [rather nice, actually] rendition on a recent So You Think You Can Dance, which I instinctively found more, ah, exciting than I otherwise would have. ... It doesn't help that the set looks like it was designed by a gay Cardassian from the 1970's.)

Date: 2010-08-11 11:18 am (UTC)(Oh Janeway/Torres… I’ve been going through the early seasons of Voyager for a vid, and I’m re-noticing just how cute they are… Plus I’m getting seriously into the idea of Janeway/Kes. It makes a lot of sense when you think about it.)
Oh, Mulder and Scully! I was firmly in the Shipper camp too, but I was never properly in the X-Files fandom so I missed the fun. These days I’m still kind of on the fence.
Hee! I can’t watch that at work but I’ll check it out later!
