Went to see National Treasure today with [livejournal.com profile] cadiliniel , and boy was it funny. I will try to summarise it in a way that will do it justice, but really it has to be seen to be believed. Please, nobody think that I'm dissing Americans here, since some of my best friends are from the States, but the patriotism in the film was so heavy-handed and overdone that it was ridiculous.

There was this treasure that the evil, nasty British stole, so the Knights Templar (who were American, donchaknow) smuggled it to the US and hid it, with the only clues being hidden in various places of American national importance, with the treasure map being hidden in invisible ink on the back of the Declaration of Independence. Nicolas Cage is the great-great-whatever of the stable boy of some important American dude, and their family secret has been passed down through the generations - the first clue to finding the treasure. So he goes on a search for it, but evil, British Sean Bean wants to take the treasure for himself. Naturally, good old Nicolas Cage wants to find it for the good of the American people, but Sean Bean and his evil British compatriots want to take the treasure for themselves. Also, Diane Kruger does not a lot except get on everyone's nerves and has no chemistry whatsoever with Nicolas Cage.

Highlights included one of the clues being gratuitously located in New York, just for the obligatory glimpse of the Statue of Liberty; Nicolas Cage being faced with a decision whether to rescue Diane Kruger or the Declaration of Independence and choosing the latter; tortured parallels being drawn between the Knights Templar and the Founding Fathers and the half-hearted assertion at the end of the movie that the treasure belongs to the whole world, then the list of the American museums it will be donated to.

So all in all, a pretty silly film, but still quite fun in a no brain required kind of way.

As well as the film, it was cool to spend the day with [livejournal.com profile] cadiliniel  and generally rant about Snape and Denethor and people with billowy cloaks and stuff. Plus, when we got out of the cinema the next bus wasn't for ages, so we were forced to go to Pizza Hut. So pretty good day all in all, even if I'm not really starting to worry about my exams, which are coming up incredibly fast.

Ooh, see you had the patience to type all up why it was so annoyingly heavey-handed with the patriotism, I just ranted about it *g*

~falls over chortling~

Heeheeheeheehee! We're going to see it anyway. Just because Nic Cage is fun and tends to liven up ridiculous high-budget-B movies :-)
