Well, it’s been a pretty full few days! I’ll document the events of the weekend before going on to the earth-shattering events of today.
Late buses and trains conspired against me on Friday night and I didn’t get to Poppy’s until gone eleven at night, but it was very nice to be there and her mother made me some supper since Poppy herself wasn’t home from work yet. Once she got back it was gone midnight and technically her birthday, so we had a little present-opening ceremony and she loved it! Couldn’t reveal it on here before but I got her a MASH keyring with Hawkeye (looking particularly yummy!) on one side and the famous, fabulous H/M kiss from GFA on the other, and it also had her name on. Also got her some books, not quite as exciting but still happily received.
Saturday was quite busy as we were getting ready for Poppy’s pink-themed birthday party. We went to Tesco for some pink candles and flowers, went to the deli for bread and olives for lunch, managed to watch a considerable amount of MASH and some Jack/Sam music videos. I’m stunned at how easy it was to convert Pops to J/S shipperdom – she has seen bits of Stargate a few times because her brother likes it but always thought it was a bit too sciencey. I explained to her about Jack and Sam, showed her one music video and she was instantly converted.
So Saturday night was the birthday party, and it was fantastic! In attendance were: Me, Poppy, Pops’ boyfriend Henry, Nick, Rosie and Emily. Since Poppy was at a loss for any pink main courses, we had Chinese for the main meal, then pink desserts (angel delight and raspberry ice-cream), and everybody had to wear something pink. I wore my poncho. Then there were many, many pink cocktails and we played Articulate (there was rather a lot of cheating on both sides). Eventually the boys went home and us four girls all slept on Poppy’s living room floor. I really like Poppy’s friends.
Sunday afternoon Poppy and I caught the train to go back to Nottingham. It took a long time and poor Pops wasn’t very well, but we got there eventually and we were all hyped because we’d slept loads on the train, so we watched Out of Mind, Into the Fire, and Hathor before going to sleep.
Monday was fabulous fun – we went into Nottingham for a look around the shops and lunch. Despite my resolution to not spend anything, I bought an entire season of X-Files on video – it was £9.99 for the entire box set, what was I meant to do, leave them there?
Monday evening we rented Zoolander and Starsky and Hutch and had a Ben Stiller/Owen Wilson double bill. Claire came to watch Starsky and Hutch with us. Twas pretty good.
This morning Poppy left for the train station as I was leaving for my four-hour Russian lecture. In the break halfway through I got a text from my brother telling me to call him asap – I did and it turned out my Stepdad has had a heart attack. Spent most of the day thereafter panicking and trying to get in touch with my mother without success. A little while ago I finally managed to get through – my Stepdad is much better, and I’m going home for a few days to see him.
Mad, mad few days.
