QVANTI CANICVLA ILLA IN FENESTRA
Feb. 7th, 2005 12:37 pmSo, I got barely three hours of sleep last night and I'm surviving on lucozade, so I'm quite tired, but also a bit hyperactive, which is an interesting combination! Some of you (ie deccaboo ) will know the effect that energy drinks have on me, and why I should never, ever have them.
So anyhoo, the worst is over now - I started at nine with Learning Strategies, where we spent an entire hour finding out the difference between active and passive learning. Woot. Then on to German Grammar. We are all in a bit of trouble because our entire year group did rather badly in the exams, particularly in the grammar test, so our Module Tutor or whatever she is came in to talk to us about why it is so important to keep up with our grammar. She explained that, when we get to Germany, people will certainly understand us even if our grammar isn't perfect, but that we will be judged on the quality of our language and if our grammar isn't up to scratch, people will assume that we are stupid or uneducated. And I can see her point. But, she then went on to say:
"There is lots of ways that you can improve your grammar."
Hold the phone!!
"There is lots of ways"? Is and ways together? And she is lecturing us on grammar? I know it isn't a huge error, and usually I wouldn't mind it that much, but talk about the pot calling the kettle black!
On the other hand, I don't mind at all when my foreign teachers make mistakes, because the general standard of their English is so high that it doesn't really matter. My Russian teacher says 'femining' instead of 'feminine', which I just find endearing. Sometimes she tells us funny stories about mistakes she made while she was learning English, like mixing up MFI and MI5, and it's just nice to know that she didn't always speak English so well - there must be hope for our Russian!
So after German Grammar, I had Russian, and now I have a two-hour break before more Russian again, and after that I have to go and discuss the German Literature text with Fred, which essentially means that he will talk and I will listen. Maybe I can try and get a word in edgeways today...
