Nice day today...
I made Welsh cakes! They turned out pretty nice, actually. Claire liked them, anyway.
Then this afternoon we went to the castle. I love the castle - it has a nice little art gallery and pretty museum exhibitions, including the Nottingham Foresters Regimental Museum, which is really interesting. I visited my favourite painting, hooray! And the nice museum guy turned the Guinevere statue around for me so that I could have a look at the back.
This evening I've been all excited and planning - I've decided that, when I finish my stint in Russia next May, I won't just fly straight home from Moscow. Instead, I'll work my way across Europe, stopping at maybe Belarus, Lithuania, the Czech Republic and Germany along the way. I haven't totally worked out my route yet (maybe Ukraine, Slovakia instead of Belarus, Lithuania) but I'm really excited about it! I'm pretty sure I could afford it if I stay in hostels and get cheap trains. I'd love to see some more of Europe - I especially want to visit Germany since I won't be studying there any more, and I may as well work my way over instead of flying straight there.

LOL, they were, weren't they?

I've left the notebook with the recipe in it in the kitchen and it's all the way downstairs and it's dark and cold and scary. So I shall get it for you tomorrow morning, if you like!

Ooh, you're a prince! Princess. Thingy. Would love to have that, when you get the chance!

I'm going to have to get my hands on Roswell - it's been years since I saw it, but I thought it was a bloody good series, second only to BtVS in the verisimilitude of its high-school-kids dialogue. It had class. Even though I often wanted to strangle Max and Liz for being so obstreperous!

And while we're on the subject of classy sf telly...the latest (broadcast last week) episode of BG...oh...my...frakking...Lords...of...Kobol! And eeeeeeeee! And holy smegging feck! I'll hold on for next Monday's download and then we'll whip you up a fresh disc and post it. You are going to shit yourself sideways. Trust me on this. And then we'll have to discuss it, because I think I know what the ultimate punchline of BG is - even if, for all we know, the writers themselves don't!

I've watched the first two of the ones that you sent me now, by the way! SO EXCITING! I'm thinking I might watch three or four tomorrow, yay!

Oh YES. And let me know what you think! - here or via email (in case we're in danger of spoilering others).

We've just been given eight more episodes of BG TOS. Ye gods, they are so funny. And yet, if you squint at them from a certain angle, the roots of new BG are all in there...

OK, le recipe:

8oz Self-raising flour
40z Butter
1 egg
A generous handful of sultanas
3oz caster sugar

Bung the flour and butter in a bowl together and rub them together to make breadcrumbs. Add the sugar and mix it in, then add the sultanas. Then add the egg and mix it in, you should end up with a big ball of dough. If it isn't sticky enough, add a dash of milk.
Roll out the dough on a floured surface so that it's fairly thin but not too thin, and cut it into cakes. I use a mince pie cutter that's maybe about three inches across, which seems about the right size.
The recipe I have says to use a griddle to cook them, but I tried it for the first couple and it was terrible. I just used an ordinary frying pan, melted a generous amount of butter in there, and put them in a few at a time. They don't need long, maybe a minute for each side. They should look sort of golden-brown. It can be a bit trial and error getting them just right, but they taste quite nice slightly burnt anyway :P
If you like, you can put sugar on them as soon as you take them out of the pan, and it's quite nice. They're yummy hot, but if you leave them for a little while they get a bit more biscuity and firm and that's very nice too!
Anything I've missed out?

Ooh, pan scones! Thankee! Will have to try that soon :-)

BTW did you know that the Irish pronunciation of the name David (buggered if I can remember how it's spelt - strangely enough, it's a name I don't ever recall seeing written down back home!) is "DAH-hee"?

Basically they're a traditional Welsh food, that you make with dough filled with dried fruit. You cut it with those little pie cutter type things, then cook them very quickly in a pan, and you end up with these flat little scone type things...
