Rules and What-not:

1. Stories should be femslash. And about Star Trek characters. Crossovers are a-ok. Any length, any rating, any theme or style. Heck, if you're moved to a vid or icons or something, those are good too.
2. Prompts should be in the format PAIRING; PROMPT WORD(S)

Kira Nerys/Kathryn Janeway: Tolerance

Kira sits at the edge of the bed, staring down at her bare feet. Moonlight from two separate moons cast shadows through the window upon her pale toes. She wiggles them in the hope that she will recognize them. She doesn’t.

Kathryn lies entangled in the sheets behind her, equally lost. Neither of them are present in this dark room. It’s a shame, really. Kira can’t remember the last time she’s been with such a beautiful woman, and she wonders now if she’ll remember this one night stand a month or two from now in the future. She hopes she will. She thinks that, perhaps, she may forego sleep for whatever time remains and exhaust every fantasy and whim with this woman. She’d be a fool not to; not many people can say they’ve been to bed with one of the most celebrated Starfleet admirals in history.

“Penny?”

The sound of Kathryn’s voice slicing through the darkness causes Kira to jolt. “Hmm?”

The bed rustles as Kathryn turns onto her side, her fingertips slowly skidding up and down the broad expanse of Kira’s back. “What are you thinking about?” She traces the little ridges of her spine.

Kira exhales. How honest should she be with this woman, this stranger? “Everything. You. Me. This world. It’s different out there. Everything is different.”

“That’s what life is, isn’t it? A series of evolving moments?”

“You could say that.” Kira traces the fingers of her left hand with her right thumb.

“Nothing ends up the way it began. That’s the one certainty in life: everything changes.”

Kira exhales slowly before she lowers herself back into the bed, allowing the wrinkled sheet to be drawn over her torso. “Did you think things would be the same when you got back?”

“You mean when we got home from the Delta Quadrant?” Kathryn draws little circles on Kira’s stomach with her index finger. “I knew things were going to change, but I had hoped they wouldn’t...not to this extent, at least.” She sighs, her breath hot on Kira’s shoulder. “I suppose that’s why they call me an idealist. I had hoped I’d have a chance to catch up on everything I’ve missed, but I’m always a day late and a dollar short. A lot happened in seven years.”

Kira nods. She tries not to think about the war, about the way she has unalterably changed over the years. “So what do you do?”

“To adapt?”

“Yes.”

“You just…do it. What other choice is there?”

“You could fight it.”

“I suppose I could, but I can’t change the galaxy. Things are the way they are. All I can do now is allow myself to change along with them and hope that I won’t be constantly lost in the process.”

“What if you can’t catch up? What if you’re always on the outside?”

Kathryn Janeway entwines her fingers with Kira’s and squeezes gently before placing a chaste kiss on her knuckles. “Then at least you and I will be outsiders together.”

Kira thinks about this and decides that, even if the world has irrevocably changed without her, it’ll be okay to be on the outside. She takes comfort in knowing that she’s not alone. There is something reassuring about the warm, solid form of this famous officer lying beside her in a rented bed. She is not alone in the world, and that makes the vast question mark of the universe that much easier to tolerate.

“Nerys?”

“Hmm?”

“Can we think about the world tomorrow?”

Kira smiles in spite of herself. “Yes.” She kisses Kathryn and the weight of the rest of the world no longer seems to matter, at least for now.

Oh my gosh, this is gorgeous. I love the wistful mood and the feeling of connection between them.

Lovely. I especially like the balance between the intimacy of the moment and its fleetingness – the rented bed, Kira's internal 'famous officer' remarks.
