Reading and Watching

Things I have been reading and watching, with spoilers:

OH! *clutches poor old heart* It's been ages since a show got me like this. Last night's was just awful. I mean, good awful. I love how they're dealing with the Mary/Matthew/Lavinia triangle. I love that Mary, in spite of her feelings, is doing everything to support and help Lavinia. I love that loving the same man doesn't make them rivals. And I love her FACES. OMG. Her warm, comforting smile to him and then her face when she turned away...

Branson, though. BLEH. When he read the news about the Romanovs, I thought that might leave him a bit... chastened? But no. "Some blameless young women were murdered... this is a metaphor for why we should hook up!" I mean... seriously?! I'm glad Sybil seems to be resisting so far but I fear it won't last. Although she certainly seems to give as good as she gets.

I am loving how Edith seems to have come into her own in the last few episodes. I am hoping and hoping that it sticks. Every time something nice happens to her it seems to go wrong, so I am worried. But then, all the other nice things that have happened to her have been to do with men paying attention to her, and this time she seems to have genuinely found something for herself, that makes her feel like a worthwhile person, so I'm thinking it may be a sticker.

Oh, I really enjoyed it! I'm interested to see how social justice-y Discworld is getting lately. I mean, I think there was always a side of that, but it seems increasingly prominent. I loved Sybil in this one, she is just... awesome. And Young Sam... dawww. He's a cool kid. Ooh, and I liked that Sam and Sybil got to have lots of sex! I liked the knitted crime-scene tape. And I'm amused by the growing bromance between Vimes and Willikins.

I'm really enjoying the whole DS9 relaunch, but this one especially. I really liked that Keiko is getting to concentrate on her career. I loved Opaka and Kira. I loved Ro and Quark. I loved Kira's confidence in Ro and the growing trust and respect between them. Also I think it's a bit classless for Prynn to be hitting on Shar so soon after his marriage crashed and burned, but eh. I don't hate it. I am still shipping Nog and Shar but I'm pretty sure it ain't going to happen. Although I am really pleased with how the relaunch generally works to include non-het, non-gender binary characters and situations. But most of all, ODO OMFG!!!!! I actually squealed when he appeared. Just... awwww! I mean, their goodbye was perfect and a good ending, but just, in that moment, that was the most wonderful thing that could possibly have happened.

I really enjoyed this, even if I did spend almost the entire trilogy going: "AH FITZ GET YOUR HEAD OUT OF YOUR ASS YOU DON'T EVEN DESERVE SOMEONE AS AWESOME AS THE FOOL!" I like Fitz but I do think he's an idiot, but I think the Fool is just... wonderful. My heart nearly broke when he died, and when he came back. Wasn't keen on the ending, though. Ideally Fitz and the Fool should have gone off to have wacky adventures together. Clearly that wasn't going to happen. My second choice was for Fitz to end up with Kettricken - they've been good friends for years, they understand one another in ways nobody else can, they get on, she can talk to him like she can't talk to anyone else, and they make a great team. I just... I'm sure Molly's great and all, but, let's face it, they were together for a very short time when they were both very young, and they are neither of them the same people now. (Also I thought he moved in pretty quick when Burrich died, just sayin'). I don't think they have a good basis for a relationship, and I don't think the books ever really sold Molly as the amazing woman Fitz seems to think she is. I don't understand why he wants her so much, apart from that fact that she was his first love.

I like biographies anyway, but this one's a real page-turner. I had so much fun reading it, and by the time I got to the end I had a list of about a dozen other biographies to read. So much fun!
